Housed in two locations, the Palazzina Uzielli and the Castello dei Conti Guidi, this is one of the largest and most original collections dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci.
The idea for a museum dedicated to Leonardo in his birthplace came about in 1919, but only took shape in 1953, after the restoration of the Castello dei Conti Guidi (1942) and IBM’s donation of a whole series of reconstructed models based on Da Vinci’s designs. Since 2004, the exhibition route has also included Palazzina Uzielli, situated in Piazza dei Guidi, which was reconfigured in 2006 by the artist Mimmo Paladino.
There are 60 models of Leonardo’s machines on display in the museum, presented with specific references to the artist’s sketches and annotations, accompanied by interactive applications. The collection includes construction machinery, equipment related to the production of textiles, mechanical watches, military machine models, as well as models of flight machines and scientific instruments. Among the models of machines for travelling in the air, water and on land, there is Leonardo’s self-propelled cart or “automobile” and the great flying wings.
Finally, there is a room dedicated to Leonardo’s studies of optics and the physics of light.
